KATANA SWORD BLACKSMITHING TECHNIQUE

Shirou Kunimitsu

For over 200 years, the Shirou Kunimitsu clan in Omuta City has preserved the art of Japanese swordsmithing, passing down techniques through generations. Today, three master craftsmen—Yasumitsu, Kunimitsu, and Kokuten—continue this legacy, forging not only swords but also traditional Japanese kitchen knives made with the same steel and hammer-forged methods. Known for their exceptional sharpness and beauty, these handmade Japanese knives embody centuries of skill while carrying the spirit of sword making into modern kitchens.

About the craftsman

MEET THE ARTISANS BEHIND SHIROU KUNIMITSU

For over 200 years, the Shirou Kunimitsu clan has passed down their traditions and techniques in crafting Japanese swords in the countryside of Omuta city, in Fukuoka prefecture.

Today, there are three craftsmen from the original family working together at the workshop: Yasumitsu, Kunimitsu, Kokuten.

They use their ancestors' wisdom to not only create katana swords, but also traditional hand-forged knives crafted with the same steel and techniques as swords.

The Shirou Kunimitsu clan is devoting themselves to inheriting and protecting sword making skills, carrying them to the next generation in the form of household and kitchen knives with unparalleled sharpness and performance.
