SPG STRIX stainless steel
Nakagawa Knives stands at the intersection of tradition and innovation, preserving Japan’s ancient forging heritage while continually exploring new materials such as SPG STRIX stainless steel, known for its remarkable balance of hardness, sharpness, and ease of sharpening. Every Nakagawa Knife is a work of art — crafted by hand, built for performance, and designed to last a lifetime.
Forging Techniques
Traditional Tanzo Forging: Each blade is forged by heating soft iron and steel until it is glowing red, then hammering it to refine the internal structure. This process densifies the metal, increasing strength, toughness, and edge durability.
Belt Hammer Forging: Unlike most blacksmiths, Nakagawa Knives forges heated steel directly using a belt hammer, producing a cleaner, more consistent grain and superior finish.
Distinctive Features & Signature Blades
Past works from master craftsman Nakagawa feature a range of particularly distinctive features.
Flame Pattern (Enmon)
A signature visual hallmark created through Nakagawa’s own forging method, producing a subtle, flowing pattern reminiscent of dancing flames straight from the forge.
Water-Quenched Honyaki
Nakagawa is said to be one of few craftsmen in all of Japan to practice this rare and revered technique which creates elegant hamon wave patterns, the mark of a truly masterful blade.
Damascus Pattern
Beautiful layered patterns formed through Nakagawa's own original methods, often described as the face of Nakagawa Knives for their elegance and individuality.
