The Soejima Glassware Handcrafted Glass Wind Chime (Furin) is a hand-blown glass wind chime in soft rainbow colors. Hung by a veranda or entrance, it catches the sunlight and scatters it in gentle color, and rings with a clear, delicate tone.

A strip of white paper hangs beneath the glass β€” traditionally called a tanzaku, used to write a short poem or a wish. As with all hand-blown glass, slight variations make each piece one of a kind.

About this artisan

Handcrafted Rainbow Wind Chime - Japanese Food Craftsman Shop

Soejima Glassware

Soejima Glassware is the last workshop in Japan still practicing jappan-buki β€” the most demanding form of free-blown glass in the country. Beside a 1,800Β°F (1,000Β°C) furnace, head craftsman Fujii Takashi blows through a rod made of glass, not iron, and handles two at once: one shaping the body of a vessel, the second drawing out its spout.

A glass rod can't be reheated β€” it would melt β€” so every piece is made in a single, continuous pass, with no second attempt. Of the workshop's three craftsmen, Fujii-san alone can do it. Nearly everything is shaped chΕ«buki, without a mould, so no two pieces are alike. Founded in 1903 and rooted in a Saga domain glass laboratory of 1852, Soejima is now the sole maker of Hizen Vidro.
