About this artisan

Handcrafted Rainbow Wind Chime - Japanese Food Craftsman Shop

Soejima Glassware

Soejima Glassware is the last workshop in Japan still practicing jappan-buki — the most demanding form of free-blown glass in the country. Beside a 1,800°F (1,000°C) furnace, head craftsman Fujii Takashi blows through a rod made of glass, not iron, and handles two at once: one shaping the body of a vessel, the second drawing out its spout.

A glass rod can't be reheated — it would melt — so every piece is made in a single, continuous pass, with no second attempt. Of the workshop's three craftsmen, Fujii-san alone can do it. Nearly everything is shaped chūbuki, without a mould, so no two pieces are alike. Founded in 1903 and rooted in a Saga domain glass laboratory of 1852, Soejima is now the sole maker of Hizen Vidro.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hizen-Vidro?

Hizen Vidro is a hand-blown glass craft from Saga City, designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Saga. Its roots reach back to the late Edo period, when the local domain built a glass kiln to make scientific and medical glassware. By the Meiji era the work had turned to lamps and tableware. Soejima Glassware, founded in 1903, is the last remaining workshop keeping the tradition alive. Every piece is shaped by hand without molds, which is exactly why the form and the color fall a little differently in each glass.

Why does my Soejima Glassware glass not look exactly like the one in the pictures?

Each glass is hand-blown and the five colored layers are shaped by hand, so the rainbow tone and the surface texture vary slightly from piece to piece. No two are identical. The one you receive is its own original.

Is the color food-safe?

The color comes from layers of colored glass fused into the body of the glass itself, not from surface paint, dye, or glaze. so there's nothing on the drinking surface that can peel, scratch off, or fall into your drink.

Is my Soejima Glassware cup dishwasher-safe?

Dishwasher heat and detergent permanently cloud and dull hand-blown glass over time, and the rapid temperature change risks cracking it. Wash by hand in lukewarm water with a little mild dish soap and a soft sponge, then rinse and dry. Skip abrasive sponges, scouring powder, and metal scrubbers (they scratch the surface) and take care inside the glass. Don't force a cloth in and twist it neither, as the thin walls can break.

Can I use it for cold drinks?

Yes, cold drinks and ice, as well as a short chill in the fridge, are fine. Just avoid sudden temperature changes and skip the freezer.

Can I pour hot drinks in my Soejima Glassware cup?

Please do not pour in hot liquid nor use it for hot drinks, as the glass may break due to sudden thermal shock (especially quenching).

Can I use it as a cutlery stand or stack it?

Please, do not put knives, forks, spoons, etc. in the Soejima Glassware cup or use the glass for storing cutlery or else. It may damage the glass and if the glass is scratched, it will be easily damaged

Also, avoid stacking pieces directly on top of each other. Use soft cloth or felt pads between items to prevent scratches.
